Karl Marx (*Trier 5.5.1818 – † London 14.3.1883) – Most have heard of Karl Marx, but probably not many have read his books. Today is the anniversary of his 200 birthday. Marx is one of the most influential thinkers and is certainly the most interesting observer of capitalism. The alienation of the workers in capitalism, the exploitation of man and nature, the war as an extended arm of the economy are only some of the topics with which Marx has profoundly dealt with and for which he offers extremely important and original analyses. But Marx is above all a philosopher of freedom. He, who was constantly suffering from deprivation and was therefore on the run and had to live in exile. Despite some erroneous conclusions Marx now lives more than ever. His work is a key to understanding today’s world.
One of the best Marx biographies written in recent years: Jürgen Neffe, Marx. Der Unvollendete, Bertelsmann, 2017. I hope that there will soon be an English translation.
